Luke 2: Mary is the WOMAN

God calls each one of us to a purpose greater than ourselves.

I have read Luke so many times, mostly at Christmas. In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken… You finish it because if you have ever been to a Christmas service you have heard that scripture. If you are like me you glance through it, not actually reading it.

Today I read it & reread it trying not to miss anything. Today I saw Mary, mother of Jesus in Luke 2 for the first time. She was going to take a census & she was going to register. I just picture her standing in a line, super preggo and engaged. In today’s society, young pregnancy is a thing, I don’t think it was a thing then, especially at 14!

I can’t imagine the thoughts going through her head. If it would have been me… I would be confused… Like why did you choose me God? OR This is SO embarrassing I am preggo and the last thing I want to be doing is standing in this line for a census. Then whoooaoo water broke & enter in baby Jesus. THEN there wasn’t room in the hotel so hey let’s stay with the animals OUTSIDE in the stable. Then an angel appeared to the guys who watch sheep, telling them to go see this Messiah… Who has been talked about for generations. Then these rando guys show up, while this brand new baby is in a manger in a stable.

Little did they know this baby was about to change everything.

What a cool story.

Nothing typical about it. Nothing normal. Nothing that had ever happened before.

But what about being a Christian is normal? Normal is a cycle on a washing machine. Stop trying to be normal. Start being who God created you to be.

Mary’s response to this event is, “but Mary treasured up all these things & pondered them in her heart.”

So often In the midst of what God is calling us to do, we forget.

We forget to absorb the beautifulness of being a son or daughter of Christ.

We forget in the sucky seasons that God is SO faithful.

Mary is this beautiful example in following Gods plans for her life. In the previous chapter of Luke she says, “my soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my savior for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant from now on all generations will call me blessed.”

It’s simply that we live with our idenities in Christ. We treasure these moments that don’t makes sense. We treasure the hard times & what we have learned about Gods faithfulness. We ponder them in our heart & think about this life changing decision that we all make to follow Christ.

We forget we are not created to be typical. Or normal. We are called to be sons and daughters of Christ. To live in our identity that we are worth so much, we are valued, we are important, we are to love others, we are created in the IMAGE OF GOD. Let’s go back to the image of God… Is it not fascinating that every person you see when you look around looks like God, all different shapes & colors & heights & languages & eye color… Like our God is creative. Our God is soo cool looking!

What season of life are you at that you need to sit down & treasure up? That you need to ponder, what exactly God is in the midst of using you. Because no matter where you are at, we are called to something so much bigger than ourselves.
