Scarves & cups of coffee

Thursdays are one of my favorite days. Why? Because I get to sit in a hipster coffee shop, drink some iced heaven & talk about God with a phenomenal girl. This morning Emilee & I talked about Philippians, a book written to encourage the persecuted Christians of the church in Philippi & to strengthen them in the difficulties they faced. Paul wrote this in prison & it was not written to correct any moral or theological wrongs but it was a “warm” letter of encouragement sent to a church suffering for it’s faith.

In my study Bible it says:

Joy is how believers who know Christ & whose futures are guaranteed by Christ respond in the context of present difficulties… Christ is the gospel; Christ is Savior and Lord; thus Christ is our life; Christ is our way of life; Christ is our future; Christ is our joy.

Christ is our joy. How hard is it for that statement to be true? I feel like this is something I constantly struggle with is to find my joy in Christ alone. I am so good at finding joy in other things or people or situations. We also talked about this book she was reading & how studies have shown that people that live in a mode of “pleasure-seeking” life is called a hedonic treadmill. Apparently the happiest people do not live life in this loop that they constantly need new things in order to keep running on this “hedonic treadmill.” They did realize the people most satisfied with life, it turned out, had strong social connections, found meaning in their work, got to exercise what they considered to be their highest talents & had a sense of some higher purpose.

So be encouraged. Christians & non-Christians are wanting a community, a job that makes them happy, using talents they’ve been blessed with and wanting to live with a higher purpose then themselves. Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again-rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need & thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. his peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thought on what is true & honorable & right & pure things that are excellent & worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned  & received from me- everything you heard from me & saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you. {Phil 4:4-9}

In Christ alone, our hope is found.
